How to Change Engine Oil in a Car
Materials Needed:
- Engine oil
- Oil filter
- Oil drain pan
- Wrench
- Funnel
- Clean rag or towel
Steps:
- Prepare the Car
Park the car on a flat surface and let the engine cool for about 10-15 minutes. This will prevent any burns when handling hot oil.
- Drain the Old Oil
Locate the oil drain plug under the car. Place the oil drain pan beneath the plug, and use a wrench to loosen the plug carefully. Allow all the old oil to drain completely into the pan.
- Remove the Old Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter, usually on the side or bottom of the engine. Use the wrench to remove the old filter. Be cautious, as some oil might spill.
- Install the New Oil Filter
Take a small amount of new oil and rub it on the rubber seal of the new oil filter to ensure a proper fit. Then, screw in the new filter by hand until it’s snug, and tighten it with the wrench slightly.
- Replace the Oil Drain Plug
After all the oil has drained, put the drain plug back in place and tighten it securely.
- Add New Oil
Open the engine oil cap on top of the engine. Insert the funnel, and pour the new oil into the engine as recommended by the car’s manual. Typically, this is around 4-5 liters, but always check the manual for the exact amount.
- Check the Oil Level
Use the dipstick to check the oil level. Add more oil if necessary until it reaches the correct level.
- Dispose of the Old Oil Properly
Pour the old oil into a sealed container and dispose of it at a recycling center or an auto shop.
